Just One Bell

Just One Bell...

How it all works...

Just One Bell is a more advanced game, but is probably not as difficult as it might first appear and is worth persisting with as it will enhance your understanding rhythm… In it, you will listen to one bell on its own ringing plain hunt  (the others have been removed).

Listen to the rhythm of the bell and decide which place bell it is.

In each clip, a bell will ring:

  • 2 whole pulls of rounds (4 changes)

  • 2 courses of Plain Hunt

  • 1 whole pull of rounds to finish.

There are lots of clips to try and they appear in a random order and possibly more than once!

Random bells are used for each exercise, so the pitch of the bell will not provide a clue!

If you want to understand more about this game and the rhythm of individual bells, then try watching our video about Plain Hunting first, where we will explain the theory of changes and run clips of Plain Hunt with one bell to the fore and at varying volumes to try and help you appreciate the importance of rhythm.

Listen carefully to the clip… you will hear just one bell!

Use the initial four blows in rounds to set the speed of the bell in your mind and then note what happens next… does it get quicker or slower and for how many blows?

In this Minor based example:

  • after the initial 4 blows of rounds, the next 5 blows all appear to be slower…

  • this isfollowed by one normal speed blow and 5 quicker ones.

  • The pace then slows again before repeating.

5 slow blows describes a full hunt from front to back… therefore as it happens immediately, it must be 1st place bell!

Just One Bell - Mixed 6 & 8 Bell Games.

In this section, just because there are 8 choices, doesn’t mean it is 8 bell ringing… We have mixed 6 and 8 bell clips, so you will need to work out whether you re listening to 6 or 8 bell ringing, by trying to identify whether a bell hunts from 1st to 6th place, or 1st to 8th place!
