For King and Country, High days and Holidays!
The bells at Pebworth rung out a little more than usual in 2022/3, due to some major national events!
Bells have always been an important part of our lives in Britain and or course, we play our part in national events when asked to.
We helped celebrate the Platinum Jubilee in June… and 70 glorious years for her majesty. Sadly, we were called on to ring again in September; this time, half muffled and in mourning for our country’s great loss. Then there was a coronation to celebrate…
...and we rang for the King!
The Pebworth team did there bit and we ‘Rang for the King’.
The whole team gathered at 13.30 on coronation day for celebration ringing as the King and Queen were processing back to the palace! We were delighted to be joined by two new team members. Charlotte Foskett and Toby Walters rang for their first big event… and very well they did too!
We were also very busy ringing, or helping to teach ringers at other local towers. This included Bretforton, Blockley, Buckland, Childswickham, Fladbury, Naunton, Offenham and Stanton.
The 'Ring for the King' campaign
We have a new King! …And in May 2023 we had a coronation to celebrate. The country requested all towers ‘Ring for the King’!
There are more than 38,000 bells and about 6,000 towers in the UK…There are plenty of ringers in many of the bigger churches and cathedrals in towns , but hundreds of smaller village churches, only have a handful of team members left… Of course, Covid has not helped that situation with many older or frail folk deciding to shield or retire. So a call went out to find more ringers… Bells and bellringing were highlighted in publications from the ‘The Times’ to the ‘Today’ program as new teams were recuited nationwide.
With 10 bells to ring at Pebworth, we rarely have enough ringers. So we joined the national recruitment campaign to help find 8,000 more ringers by Coronation Day.
